Commander in Chief
United States Pacific Fleet
27 August 1998
To whom it may concern:
In Mark Helprin's novel, A Soldier of the Great War, there is
a wonderful scene where the protagonist says to his dying father--
"...Do you remember, when I was two or three years old,
that you read me a book about German rabbits.'?"...
"I used to sit in your lap and lie against your chest. Sometimes I would
fall asleep."
"I remember."
"I wanted to say to you...I don't know exactly how to explain it, but
these were the best times of my life. I was happier then than I have been ever
since. The world was perfect."
In much the same way, United Through Reading is a program which fosters
literacy through family bonding. This program which United Through Reading
has implemented in the Pacific Fleet is uniquely suited to the special
limitations imposed on families by lengthy deployments and has been extremely
well received by our active duty personnel and their dependents. The video
process stresses reading enhancement for our young dependents and highlights the
importance of families reading together as an activity which enriches family
values.
Deployed naval personnel need active, positive means by which family members
can stay in close contact. United Through Reading's approach accomplishes
this objective with the added benefits of promoting education, enhanced
self-esteem and family bonding. Their efforts to improve the quality of life of
our naval force men and women are greatly appreciated. I look forward to working
with them in the future.
Sincerely,
Archie Clemins
