How it Works

Transitions Program: Circle of Communication

The United Through Reading® Transitions Program Works in a Four-Step Process:

How It Works

Benefits of participation are:

  • Talented, well-trained volunteers facilitate workshops for parents, during which participants learn techniques on how to read aloud, how to choose books, how to personalize the reading experience, and how to communicate and bond with children while reading together.
  • The participants are recorded reading a storybook they’ve chosen for their children, and then the participant sends a new book and a personalized read-aloud DVD to their children at home.
  • The family at home is encouraged to send feedback to the participant regarding the children’s response.
  • These children can watch the DVDs repeatedly, which provides priceless and sustained connections with the parent.
  • Boosts family morale and reinforces parental support felt by the parent or caregiver at home.
  • Teaches adults techniques on reading aloud, choosing books and personalizing the recorded reading.
  • Eases children’s fears about their parent’s absence and reduces anxiety upon reunion.
  • Provides children an opportunity to see their parents in a positive light.
