Book Selection:
Choose books that are
not too long, are age appropriate, and that you enjoy yourself (1-3 sentences
per page/5 min. long for 3-5 year olds).
Preparation: Practicing is important to see how you will read a
particular story, to ensure a book is age appropriate and that you like it.
Interaction: Sit close and make sure children can interact and experience
the book personally. Allow children to see and touch the books as
you read with them.
Questions: Asking questions keeps
children involved in the book and stimulates their
minds and imaginations.
Change your Voice: Your voice is a powerful way to hold their interest
and attention. Use your voice to make imitations and intonations.
Expression: Use eye contact and
lots of facial expressions. Remember that it’s not just about the pages and words you are reading, it’s about YOU!
Have fun yourself: Your enthusiasm will be contagious and the children
will learn that it can be fun to read because you are their reading role model.
