Meet Joaquin and Xavier Flores

April 20, 2015

_DSC7687FINALDuring Month of the Military Child, we are taking the opportunity to highlight some of our country’s most resilient children, our military kids, who constantly show strength and resourcefulness in the face of big challenges, including frequent separation.

Meet Joaquin and Xavier Flores. Joaquin is 4 years old and his brother, Xavier, is a year and a half. Joaquin was born while his dad dad, Christopher, was deployed from April 2010 through April 2011. Christopher started recording books with United Through Reading before Joaquin was born and continued throughout his deployment. Though Christopher is not currently deployed, he is assigned to Protective Services Battalion and travels often.

The Flores boys are used to their Dad traveling, but they still miss him when he isn’t around. Christina tries to keep the daily routines as normal as possible for the boys when their dad is gone, and United Through Reading is part of that routine, and has been since they were born. Joaquin and Xavier love being able to watch their dad read to them on video when he is away. Christina says that watching the videos and reading along with a book has instilled a love of reading in them at a very young age; it’s one of the things them helps them cope until Daddy is home again. We’re glad to be able to help bridge the gap for these boys until their dad is with them again.
