Become part of the United Through Reading team.

All good film and literary productions rely on a great crew to bring them to life. United Through Reading couldn’t produce over 25,000 short films each year without the help of many talented individuals. If you’d like to be part of our volunteer team, we will find you a spot. All volunteer positions are “virtual” and with most, geography doesn’t matter. Here is a sampling of our fabulous crew:

Perhaps our most pressing and common volunteer need is for our Program Advocates. Supporters of our program that live or work within a military community, our Program Advocates scout for locations that would benefit from the United Through Reading program and work with a UTR Program Manager to publicize the program and assist as needed. The Program Advocate is the eyes and ears of our program in the field.

Our team of writers develop blogs and articles for United Through Reading. The topics range from early childhood literacy to maintaining connections with loved ones serving our country, and many topics in between. Our volunteer writers bring their own ideas and create their own from topics suggested by United Through Reading staff.

Our production team needs folks who can take black and white and turn it into living color. If you have a knack for graphics design, we are always in need of help updating our collateral materials and keeping them fresh.

Do you like to read children’s books? We’d love for you to read them with a purpose and write book reviews. This position is perfect for reading specialists or others who can evaluate books for ease of reading aloud, word content and diversity, age appropriateness, etc.

Production Crew
There are so many behind-the-scenes needs in our program. Needs here are sometimes short term and sometimes ongoing administration that can be done from your own home.

Do you like spreading the word about fabulous programs like United Through Reading? Do you sometimes feel guilty about the amount of time you spend on Social Media? Our publicists work to promote the program and affiliated topics such as literacy, military families, and the like via social media. If you’d like to peruse social media with a purpose, you might be the right person for this team.

Film and Location Crew
Would you like to work behind the camera? We often have opportunities to bring a “pop-up studio” to a location where service members can make recordings. At these events, our volunteers help the service members make their videos and select books appropriate for the child receiving the video. These volunteers are those who capture the special moments that are sent home to family.

Would you like to be in front of the camera? On an ongoing basis, we are making training videos for volunteers and readers alike. If you’d like to try your hand (or face and voice) in these endeavors, we can put you on our call-back list.
