United Through Reading targets underserved children, youth and families.
Reading aloud with children enhances family bonding and better prepares children
for success in school and life. It is a simple, inexpensive way to prevent many
of society's challenges.
One in three American kindergartners arrive in school unprepared to learn and only
50% of infants and toddlers are routinely read to by their parents.
37% of children scored below basic competency levels on the reading test.
According to educators, this means that these children cannot read.
60% of high school seniors are not proficient readers.
23% of adult Americans are functionally illiterate.
While these statistics are alarming, research shows that the simple activity
of parents reading aloud with their children (especially from an early age) can
help.
"The single most important activity for building the knowledge required
for the eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children."
"It's proven that experiences during early childhood determine whether
a child grows to be intelligent or dull, fearful or self assured, articulate or
tongue-tied. the more words a child hears, the faster she/he learns
language."
