Meet the United Through Reading Team
Sally Ann Zoll, Ed.D., Chief Executive Officer
As the multifaceted leader of United Through Reading, Sally serves as the chief guardian and spokesperson for the organization’s vision and mission, builds and sustains relationships with stakeholders and partners, and leads programs, finances, and internal team. In her distinguished career, Sally’s values for education are always evident.
Sally has a doctorate in educational leadership and management, a master’s degree in special education from the University of San Diego and a BA in elementary education from Purdue University. From her first position as an elementary school teacher to her present leadership role, Sally has integrated her knowledge of education and educational technology with her talents for building and leading organizations of all sizes in the public, private and nonprofit sectors. Sally is an Army spouse of almost 30 years and her son, an Army reservist, has served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Contact Sally Ann Zoll
Kara Dallman, MBA, Sr. Director for Operations
Kara leads a team of six Program Managers and the Director of National Engagement who work directly with each service branch, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserve Components; military medical facilities serving the Wounded, Ill, and Injured; program partners such as the USO; and with volunteers and representatives of other emerging initiatives to provide training and support to those offering our program in the field. Kara also serves as the staff liaison to the Strategic Growth Committee of the organization’s Board of Trustees.
Kara has eight years of nonprofit management experience at United Through Reading. In 2008, she retired from the Navy as a Commander with 12 years on active duty, including seven months after 9-11 with the 31st Naval Construction Regiment in Port Hueneme, CA, and eight years in the Navy Reserve. Kara earned a BA from The College of the Holy Cross and an MBA from San Diego State University. In 2013, Kara received the Sanctae Crucis Award from Holy Cross, an award for alumni who have distinguished themselves professionally and in the service of justice. A proud Navy spouse of 22 years, Kara is a mother of two; her daughter Hannah is 18 and her son Andrew is 17. Contact Kara Dallman
Kurt Schwend, MBA, PMP, Sr. Director for Technology
Kurt plans, organizes and directs a comprehensive technology strategy on behalf of United Through Reading, ensuring the smooth and continuous operation of technology support services to a geographically dispersed team across the US and providing technical guidance to a user community of volunteers located across the US and those stationed with forward deployed units. Kurt also serves as the staff liaison to the Board’s Technology Committee.
Kurt has 19 years of hands-on technology management and leadership experience, the last 10 years leading a team of technologists supporting 13 higher education campuses in the western United States and the Pacific. Kurt spent six years on active duty as an F-14 Radar Intercept Officer, completing three deployments on the USS Saratoga (CV-60), and earning a Naval Strike Flight Medal for flying 20 combat missions in Bosnia. He is a Project Management Professional (PMP) and earned a BS in Astrophysics at UCLA, and an MBA with an emphasis in Technology Management through the University of Phoenix. Contact Kurt Schwend
Kate Wheeler, MA, Sr. Director for Development and Strategic Alliances
Kate leads the program support staff and works closely with United Through Reading’s Development and Communications Committee and its Board of Trustees to plan and direct program support operations including resource development, data management, outreach, communication and strategic alliances with other nonprofits, corporations and funders.
Kate has 18 years of experience in the nonprofit arena. Before joining United Through Reading, Kate served as Executive Director for a community nonprofit in Aspen, Colorado for four years and then worked as an independent consultant for nearly ten years, helping diverse nonprofit organizations meet their development and strategic goals. Kate is currently a PhD student in Leadership Studies at the University of San Diego (USD), where she received an MA in Nonprofit Leadership. Suzan Caughlan, National Program Manager, Marines
Suzan trains and supports U. S. Marine Corps Commands in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Marine Expeditionary Forces and 4th Marine Division to implement the United Through Program in the field. After earning a BA from University of West Florida, she became credentialed in special education and devoted ten years to her career as a special education teacher. As a military spouse, she has worked with Marine Corps families for more than 30 years as a volunteer for family support and networking groups. Contact Suzan Caughlan
Kristin Driscoll, Director of National Engagement
Kristin manages United Through Reading’s National Engagement efforts and is leading the way to United Through Reading’s transformation into a Service Enterprise in the creation of a sustainable work corps of volunteers and the organizational infrastructure to support them.
Following a career in business process definition, project and program management, and systems design, she now dedicates her time and energy in support of military families. In the past ten years, she has provided oversight of volunteer programs for numerous military and educational nonprofits.
Kristin holds an MBA from the University of Central Florida. Kristin received the Northern Virginia Association of Volunteer Administrators 2014 Outstanding New Professional Award. Contact Kristin Driscoll
Samantha Hagan Lingad, National Program Manager, Navy/ West Coast
Samantha facilitates the expansion, establishment and support of the United Through Reading programs for the Navy’s Pacific Fleet.
After graduating from George Mason University, she spent four years at a small nonprofit raising funds for historical sites before finding her true calling serving military families.
She has worked for USO, Inc. as a programs manager and helped launch USO Northwest’s mobile canteen. She is a Navy spouse of three years. Contact Samantha Hagan Lingad
Wimberly Kneisler, National Program Manager, Navy/East Coast
Wimberly works closely with Navy leadership to bring United Through Reading to the Navy’s Atlantic Fleet. She trains coordinators to facilitate the program, provides briefs, on-going support and management, and community outreach to raise awareness and expand program participation.
With a background in elementary school education, Wimberly brings her passion to promote literacy, along with 31 years experience in the military family lifestyle, to the United Through Reading team. Contact Wimberly Kneisler
Melissa Malloy, National Program Manager, Army
For the past five years, Melissa has worked to raise awareness of the United Through Reading program throughout the Army, through training and support of U.S. Army units. As an Army spouse of sixteen years, Melissa is intimately familiar with separation, due to deployment, training and long work hours.
As a mother of two, Melissa has seen the impacts of the program and the benefits it can provide, not only to children, but to boost the morale of the service member as well. A graduate of Florida State University with a BA in Hospitality Administration, Melissa has worked in management, marketing and sales for large corporations. Contact Melissa Malloy
Tina Wright, National Program Manager, US Coast Guard
Tina has been working to grow the United Through Reading Program in the US Coast Guard since 2011. Tina was a USO employee in 2007-09 as the Programs Coordinator where she was responsible for events and program planning for the service members and families attached to Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo, Japan. She also spent time serving as Command Ombudsman for USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49).
Tina has been a military spouse for 20 years; her husband retired from the US Navy in August 2013. In addition to being Program Manager for the US Coast Guard, Tina also handles multiple administrative responsibilities for the organization. Contact Tina Wright
Victoria Cameron-Lewis, Director of Strategic Alliances
Victoria plays a principal role in alliance strategy and implementation, relationship building, project management and marketing with major national corporations and organizations to support synergy to move the mission of United Through Reading forward while providing significant benefit to the organization’s partners.
Victoria has a BA in Political Science from the University of Hawaii and an MPA from the University of Oklahoma. She is a Navy spouse of 15 years and has worked extensively in support of the military community. Contact Victoria Cameron-Lewis
Taylor Monaco, Director of Communications
As the Director of Communications, Taylor strategically leads United Through Reading’s internal and external communication efforts. Working with staff, volunteers and the Board’s Marketing Communications Committee, Taylor helps to successfully tell the story of United Through Reading and grow awareness and participation with the military families United Through Reading serves.
Taylor earned a BA in Mass Communications from Miami University of Ohio and has spent 8 years in the communications field working in public relations, marketing and community engagement. Contact Taylor Monaco
Simi Rush, Development Associate
As Development Associate, Simi works closely with both the program delivery and program support teams to manage all of United Through Reading’s data systems including donor records, beneficiary data, evaluation instruments and communications vehicles.
Simi holds an MA in Nonprofit Leadership from the University of San Diego and a BA in Communication from the University of California, San Diego and has more than 12 years of professional experience serving the nonprofit sector in San Diego. She is a Navy spouse of 10 years. Contact Simi Rush
Gretchen Schnitzer, Grant Writer
As a member of the development team, Gretchen manages a docket of hundreds of annual funders for program support. As well as identifying and researching new funding opportunities, Gretchen prepares proposals, funding reports and general communication to grant makers explaining the impact of their investments in United Through Reading.
In addition to her fundraising work, Gretchen provides support to United Through Reading staff on goal-setting and outcome measures. Gretchen has a background in marketing, business planning, customer care, teaching and writing. Contact Gretchen Schnitzer
