Meet the United Through Reading Team

Sally Ann Zoll, Ed.D., Chief Executive Officer | Coronado, Calif.

Sally Zoll
As the multifaceted leader of United Through Reading, Sally serves as the chief guardian and spokesperson for the organization’s vision and mission, builds and sustains relationships with stakeholders and partners, and leads programs, finances, and internal team. In her distinguished career, Sally’s values for education are always evident.

Sally has a doctorate in educational leadership and management, a master’s degree in special education from the University of San Diego and a BA in elementary education from Purdue University. From her first position as an elementary school teacher to her present leadership role, Sally has integrated her knowledge of education and educational technology with her talents for building and leading organizations of all sizes in the public, private and nonprofit sectors.  Sally is an Army spouse of almost 30 years and her son, an Army reservist, has served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Kara Dallman, MBA, Sr. Director for Operations | Fairfax, Va.

Kara DallmanKara leads a team of six Program Managers and the Director of National Engagement who work directly with each service branch, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserve Components; military medical facilities serving the Wounded, Ill, and Injured; program partners such as the USO; and with volunteers and representatives of other emerging initiatives to provide training and support to those offering our program in the field.  Kara also serves as the staff liaison to the Strategic Growth Committee of the organization’s Board of Trustees.

Kara has eight years of nonprofit management experience at United Through Reading.  In 2008, she retired from the Navy as a Commander with 12 years on active duty, including seven months after 9-11 with the 31st Naval Construction Regiment in Port Hueneme, CA, and eight years in the Navy Reserve. Kara earned a BA from The College of the Holy Cross and an MBA from San Diego State University.  In 2013, Kara received the Sanctae Crucis Award from Holy Cross, an award for alumni who have distinguished themselves professionally and in the service of justice.  A proud Navy spouse of 22 years, Kara is a mother of two; her daughter Hannah  is 18 and her son Andrew is 17.  Contact Kara Dallman

Victoria Cameron-Lewis, Sr. Director for Development | Philadelphia, Pa.

Victoria Cameron Lewis

Victoria works closely with the Chief Executive Officer and the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees to plan and direct resource development and fundraising to support United Through Reading’s mission delivery. Victoria leads a team of development and communications professionals who together provide program support through alliance strategies, marketing and campaigns, special events, gift development and donor stewardship.

Victoria has six years of nonprofit management experience at United Through Reading. She has a BA in Political Science from the University of Hawaii and an MPA from the University of Oklahoma. Victoria is a Navy spouse of 18 years and has worked extensively in support of the military community. Contact Victoria Cameron-Lewis

Kurt Schwend, MBA, PMP, Sr. Director for Technology | San Diego, Calif.

Kurt SchwendKurt plans, organizes and directs a comprehensive technology strategy on behalf of United Through Reading, ensuring the smooth and continuous operation of technology support services to a geographically dispersed team across the US and providing technical guidance to a user community of volunteers located across the US and those stationed with forward deployed units. Kurt also serves as the staff liaison to the Board’s Technology Committee.

Kurt has 19 years of hands-on technology management and leadership experience, the last 10 years leading a team of technologists supporting 13 higher education campuses in the western United States and the Pacific. Kurt spent six years on active duty as an F-14 Radar Intercept Officer, completing three deployments on the USS Saratoga (CV-60), and earning a Naval Strike Flight Medal for flying 20 combat missions in Bosnia.   He is a Project Management Professional (PMP) and earned a BS in Astrophysics at UCLA, and an MBA with an emphasis in Technology Management through the University of Phoenix. Contact Kurt Schwend

Program Delivery

Samantha Hagan Lingad, National Program Manager, Navy/ West Coast | San Diego, Calif.

Samantha Hagan-LingadSamantha facilitates the expansion, establishment and support of the United Through Reading programs for the Navy commands based from the Western half of the U.S. to Bahrain and everywhere in between.

A graduate of George Mason University, she spent four years at a small nonprofit raising funds for historical sites before finding her true calling serving military families.

She has worked for USO, Inc. as a programs manager and launched USO Northwest’s mobile canteen. An active duty Navy Spouse, Samantha currently resides in San Diego. Contact Samantha Hagan Lingad

Wimberly Kneisler, National Program Manager, Navy/East Coast | Norfolk, Va.

Wimberly KneislerWimberly works closely with Navy leadership to bring United Through Reading to the Navy’s Atlantic Fleet.  She trains coordinators to facilitate the program, provides briefs, on-going support and management, and community outreach to raise awareness and expand program participation.

With a background in elementary school education, Wimberly brings her passion to promote literacy, along with 31 years experience in the military family lifestyle, to the United Through Reading team. Contact Wimberly Kneisler

Melissa Malloy, National Program Manager, Army | Fort Carson, Colo.

Melissa MalloyFor the past six years, Melissa has worked to raise awareness of the United Through Reading program throughout the Army, through training and support of U.S. Army units.  As an Army spouse of sixteen years, Melissa is intimately familiar with separation, due to deployment, training and long work hours.

As a mother of two, Melissa has seen the impacts of the program and the benefits it can provide, not only to children, but to boost the morale of the service member as well.  A graduate of Florida State University with a BA in Hospitality Administration, Melissa has worked in management, marketing and sales for large corporations.  Contact Melissa Malloy

Alia Reese, National Program Manager, United States Marine Corps | Fredericksburg. Va.

Alia works with Marine Corps and Air Force commands to bring the United Through Reading program to all USMC and USAF families who are separated by requirements of service. As an active duty spouse for over 16 years who has raised young children through her husband’s multiple deployments, Alia is very familiar with the best practices and programs for developing and maintaining family connections over distance.

Alia has a Master’s Degree in Psychology and has been an active volunteer in military family programs for many years. She is also the award winning author of My Daddy is a Marine and My Mommy is a Marine, and has written for various online publications.  Contact Alia Reese

Program Support

Taylor Monaco, Director of Communications | Fort Wayne, Ind.

Taylor MonacoAs the Director of Communications, Taylor strategically leads United Through Reading’s internal and external communication efforts. Working with staff, volunteers and the Board’s Marketing Communications Committee, Taylor helps to successfully tell the story of United Through Reading and grow awareness and participation within the military families served by United Through Reading.

Taylor earned a BA in Mass Communications from Miami University of Ohio and for 8 years has worked in the field of communications. Contact Taylor Monaco

Simi Rush, Director of Campaigns and Initiatives | Portsmouth, R.I.

Simi RushAs Director of Campaigns and Initiatives, Simi oversees various development related campaigns, such as employee giving campaigns, while also serving as the primary project manager in the implementation of new initiatives to further align key partners to United Through Reading’s mission.

Simi holds an MA in Nonprofit Leadership from the University of San Diego and a BA in Communication from the University of California, San Diego and has more than 14 years of professional experience serving the nonprofit sector in San Diego. Gretchen Schnitzer, Grant Writer | St. Ignatius, Mont.

Gretchen SchnitzerAs a member of the development team, Gretchen manages a docket of hundreds of annual funders for program support.  As well as identifying and researching new funding opportunities, Gretchen prepares proposals, funding reports and general communication to grant makers explaining the impact of their investments in United Through Reading.

In addition to her fundraising work, Gretchen provides support to United Through Reading staff on goal-setting and outcome measures.  Gretchen has a background in marketing, business planning, customer care, teaching and writing. Contact Gretchen Schnitzer

Terri Wetterberg, Stewardship and Database Manager | San Diego, Calif.Terri-Wetterberg-Headshot

As the Stewardship and Data Manager, Terri Wetterberg works closely with both the program delivery and program support teams to manage all of United Through Reading’s data systems including donor records, beneficiary data, evaluation instruments and communications vehicles.  She also oversees the development, implementation and management of UTR’s stewardship program designed to foster and nurture long-term, meaningful relationships between the UTR and all of our generous donors.

Terri has more than 10 years of nonprofit professional and volunteer experience. She received a BA in Communications from Purdue University and MA in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from the University of San Diego. She recently moved back to San Diego after having traveled and volunteered her way through Asia and Australia. Contact Terri Wetterberg
