Meet the United Through Reading Team

Sally Ann Zoll, Ed.D., Chief Executive Officer | Coronado, Calif.


As the multifaceted leader of United Through Reading, Sally serves as the chief guardian and spokesperson for the organization’s vision and mission, builds and sustains relationships with stakeholders and partners, and leads programs, finances, and internal team. In her distinguished career, Sally’s values for education are always evident.

Sally has a doctorate in educational leadership and management, a master’s degree in special education from the University of San Diego and a BA in elementary education from Purdue University. From her first position as an elementary school teacher to her present leadership role, Sally has integrated her knowledge of education and educational technology with her talents for building and leading organizations of all sizes in the public, private and nonprofit sectors.  Sally is an Army spouse of almost 30 years and her son, an Army reservist, has served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Kara Dallman, MBA, Sr. Director for Development and Strategic Alliances  | Fairfax, Va.

Kara Dallman

Kara works closely with the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Trustees’ Development Committee to plan and direct resource development and fundraising to support United Through Reading’s mission delivery. Kara leads a team of development and communications professionals who together provide program support through alliance strategies, marketing and campaigns, special events, gift development, and donor stewardship.

Kara has ten years of nonprofit management experience at United Through Reading.  In 2008, she retired from the Navy as a Commander with 12 years on active duty, including seven months after 9-11 with the 31st Naval Construction Regiment in Port Hueneme, CA, and eight years in the Navy Reserve. Kara earned a BA from The College of the Holy Cross and an MBA from San Diego State University. In 2013, Kara received the Sanctae Crucis Award from Holy Cross, an award for alumni who have distinguished themselves professionally and in the service of justice. Kurt Schwend, MBA, PMP, Sr. Director for Operations and Technology | San Diego, Calif.

Kurt Schwend

Kurt leads a team of four Program Managers who work directly with each service branch, the Coast Guard, and the Reserve Component; military medical facilities serving the Wounded, Ill, and Injured; program partners such as the USO; and with volunteers and representatives of other emerging initiatives to provide training and support to those offering our program in the field. In addition, Kurt plans, organizes and directs a comprehensive technology strategy ensuring the smooth and continuous operation of technology support services to a geographically dispersed team across the US and providing technical guidance to a user community of volunteers located across the US and those stationed with forward deployed units. Kurt also serves as the staff liaison to the Board’s Strategic Growth Committee and serves as the head of United Through Reading’s Technology Advisory Group.

Kurt has 21 years of hands-on technology management and leadership experience, the last 10 years leading a team of technologists supporting 13 higher education campuses in the western United States and the Pacific. Kurt spent six years on active duty as an F-14 Radar Intercept Officer, completing three deployments on the USS Saratoga (CV-60), and earning a Naval Strike Flight Medal for flying 20 combat missions in Bosnia. He is a Project Management Professional (PMP) and earned a BS in Astrophysics at UCLA, and an MBA with an emphasis in Technology Management through the University of Phoenix. Contact Kurt Schwend

Program Delivery

Samantha Hagan Lingad, Director of Operations and Program Manager, Navy – East | Virginia Beach, Va.

Samantha Hagan-Lingad

As Director of Operations, Samantha works with the Program Managers to coordinate national program campaigns, oversee volunteer recruitment, and establish, expand, and support United Through Reading programs throughout the United States Military. She also works directly with U.S. Navy commands based from the Eastern half of the U.S. to Rota, Spain, and everywhere in between.

A graduate of George Mason University, she spent four years at a small nonprofit raising funds for historical sites before finding her true calling serving military families. She has worked for USO, Inc. as a programs manager and launched USO Northwest’s mobile canteen. Lily Carlton, Program Manager, Navy – West | San Diego, Calif.

As a member of the Operations team, Lily works directly with U.S. Navy Commands throughout the western half of the United States. She works to increase awareness and implement United Through Reading programs to sailors and their families. Her three daughters have benefited from United Through Reading videos while their father was stationed in Iraq in 2008.

As a Navy Chaplain spouse for more than 14 years, she has worked side by side with her husband in ministry. While living overseas, she organized events to increase morale for service members and military families as well as local outreaches. An active member of various military spouse organizations, Lily knows the importance of community and is passionate about caring for military families. With a degree in Marketing from California State University, Dominguez Hills, she spent 10 years in the Aerospace Industry working on military programs. Contact Lily Carlton.

Molly Haskin, National Program Manager, United States Army, Air Force, and National Guard | Alexandria, Va.

As a member of the Operations team, Molly facilitates program distribution and implementation to Army, Air Force, and National Guard commands nationwide. Through dissemination of the program across commands, she maximizes the number of Soldiers and Airmen benefitting from the program in order to ultimately increase connections for military families affected by service related separation.

A licensed, certified Speech-Language Pathologist, Molly received her Masters of Science in Communication, Speech, and Hearing Disorders from East Carolina University.  She has practiced in her field for ten years and finds the development of early childhood literacy skills a specific area of interest.  As an active duty military spouse of 16 years, Molly’s experiences stem from volunteering and leading military family support programs, and she understands the direct benefits these programs provide to her own family during her husband’s multiple deployments.  Molly’s husband remains on active duty and they reside in Alexandria, Va with their two children. Contact Molly Haskin.

Alia Reese, National Program Manager, United States Marine Corps | Fredericksburg. Va.

080816-101747Alia works with Marine Corps commands to bring the United Through Reading program to all USMC families who are separated by requirements of service. As an active duty spouse for over 16 years who has raised young children through her husband’s multiple deployments, Alia is very familiar with the best practices and programs for developing and maintaining family connections over distance.

Alia has a Master’s Degree in Psychology and has been an active volunteer in military family programs for many years. She is also the award-winning author of My Daddy is a Marine and My Mommy is a Marine, and has written for various online publications.  Contact Alia Reese

Program Support

Carol Macrander, Director for Grant Development | Melbourne, Fla. 

As Director for Grant Development, Carol works with corporate and private foundations to identify mission alignment opportunities.  Working closely with the Program Managers and Development Team, Carol communicates to granting organizations the impact their investments make on the military community through United Through Reading.

Carol holds a Master of Human Relations degree from the University of Oklahoma as well as a BA in Russian Studies from Dickinson College and has more than 10 years of program management experience in nonprofit and government sectors.  Carol is an Air Force spouse who has first-hand experience navigating parenthood during multiple deployments.  As a former Air Force Key Spouse and Key Spouse Mentor she has been honored to assist Air Force families during times of deployment and feels her work at United Through Reading allows her to continue her service to the military community. Taylor Monaco, Director of Communications | Fort Wayne, Ind.

Taylor MonacoAs the Director of Communications, Taylor strategically leads United Through Reading’s internal and external communication efforts. Working with staff, volunteers, beneficiaries, and the Board’s Marketing Communications Committee, Taylor helps to successfully tell the story of United Through Reading and grow awareness and communicate impact within the military families we serve.

Taylor earned a BA in Mass Communications from Miami University of Ohio and has worked in communications, marketing, and public relations for nearly 10 years. Born and raised in San Diego, Taylor and her family currently reside in Northeast Indiana. Contact Taylor Monaco

 

Gretchen Schnitzer, Grant Writer | St. Ignatius, Mont.Gretchen Schnitzer

Gretchen assists the United Through Reading development team with identifying and researching new funding opportunities, preparing proposals and grant applications which explain the impact of United Through Reading on the military community. Gretchen has a background in marketing, business planning, customer care, teaching, and writing.

Terri Wetterberg, Director of Annual Giving and Stewardship | San Diego, Calif.

As the Director of Annual Giving and Stewardship, Terri Wetterberg is responsible for the strategic execution and management of a comprehensive annual giving program, and the development, implementation, and management of United Through Reading’s stewardship program designed to foster and nurture long-term, meaningful relationships between UTR and its generous donors. In addition, she fosters the growth of best practices in the supporting areas of gift processing, data management, evaluation instruments, and communications vehicles.

Terri has more than 10 years of nonprofit professional and volunteer experience. She received a BA in Communications from Purdue University and an MA in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from the University of San Diego.
